Skin & coat health, why is it important?

The skin is the single largest organ of a pet’s body and is the first protective barrier from the outside. Together, the skin and coat provide protection for the body and is a key component of their overall health.

What contributes to healthy skin?

To ensure that a pet has a healthy skin and coat a nutrient-rich, complete and balanced diet that contains ingredients such as meats and vegetables is a must. This is to ensure the pet is receiving the correct amount of vitamins and nutrients they need.

What should a pet’s skin look like?

The skin should be smooth and the coat should be clean and in good condition. In order to help identify if a pet has a problem with its skin or coat, it is important to have knowledge of what healthy should look like.

  • A pet’s skin should be pink or black depending on the breed or their genetics

  • There should be no crusting, scaling, redness, inflammation or signs of excessive itching

  • A healthy coat should be shiny, quite smooth, soft and thick with no broken hairs or bald patches

What ingredients help support skin health?

Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids which cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied in the diet. They help to keep the pets skin soft and supple and the coat soft and glossy.

They also provide support for joints and are important for visual and cognitive health in growing kittens and puppies. Zinc and Vitamin E are also nutrients that contribute towards healthy skin and coat.
